Khamis Nyale was the hero as his two goals helped Coast Region stun Western Region 2-0 to finish third in the National U-13 Championship whose curtain came down on Sunday at Nakuru Athletic Club.

The two teams had played out to a one all draw in the opening group match on Saturday before Coast Region qualified for semis courtesy of a 2-1 success over Central Region.

They however failed to qualify for the finals after going down with a similar margin against Nyanza in the semis, dropping to third position playoff where defeat Western who lost 1-0 to Nairobi in the other semis.

Nairobi emerged the eventual winners beating Nyanza 5-4 in post-match penalty shootout lottery after settling for a barren draw during the regulation time.

With the triumph Nairobi scooped a championship trophy and medals while first runners up Nyanza and second runners up Coast were both awarded medals.

The Coast quartet of midfielders Ibrahim Mone, Suleiman Juma, Roby Mangi and strikers Khamis Nyale who finished as the top scorer with five goals, are among the 34 players selected to the National U-13 Youth Soccer team following their superb displays.

The two day championship organized for the first time by Football Kenya Federation FKF consisted of six regions; Coast, Western, Nairobi, Central, Nyanza and Rift Valley.

Selected players will undergo training before being trimmed to 18 players to form a team which will represent the country in England in a special tournament arranged by Victor Wanyama’s former club Southampton to be held in August.
