Kilifi, KENYA: Police in Kilifi on Sunday shot dead a youth suspected to be a drug dealer at Migamuni area, in Kibaoni, a few meters from Pwani University.

Speaking to Baraka FM on phone, Kilifi OCPD Alexander Makau said the incident took place when the deceased, Jamal Washe, charged at the police with stones during a police patrol earlier Sunday morning.

He said the police intended to arrest him but in a call of defense, one officer shot the deceased on the chest.

“Basically, Jamal started hitting the officers with stones during the ambush at the Migamuni den where the sale of illicit drugs is taking place,” Makau said.

“The officer had no other way defend himself form the situation as the deceased kept on throwing stones and damaged his face despite police shooting in the air to cool down the situation. But he is a drug dealer and we have managed to recover bhang, phones and other items from him,” he added.

But according to Rama Gambo Nyamawi, a brother to the deceased, Jamal never hit the police with stones as alleged but only wanted to recover his phone from them.

He said the phone had been taken by the police when he went to eat at a nearby food cafe.

“My brother is innocent,” said Nyamawi as tears fell down his cheeks.

“I just heard that my brother has been shot dead on reaching the scene from my work place. But I do not know that my brother is selling drugs. Ooh, Jamal rest in peace brother, I love you so much,” Nyamawi added.

Baraka Thoya, an eye witness to the incident refuted claims by police that the deceased charged at the police with stones and a knife.

“It’s a total lie that Jamal attacked the police with stones and knife, I was there and I am even one of those who searched him. He had nothing bad,” said Thoya.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the Kilifi County hospital Mortuary.
