Nigerian man charged in court for being in the country illegally

Mombasa, KENYA: A Nigerian man was on Friday charged in a Mombasa court for allegedly being in the country illegally.

Court heard that Okwonkwo Cajethari was  on 5th January 2017  found to be unlawfully present in the country.

The accused person was arrested at the Coast Regional Immigration headquarters office located at Uhuru Na Kazi within the Republic of Kenya.

Mr. Okwonkwo denied being in the country without a valid visa before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogot.

Mr. Ogot ordered the  accused person to be detained, pending the hearing of the case on 18th January.

Meanwhile, the court also dismissed an application to have two employees of Bandari Sacco detained over alleged theft in the institution.

When delivering the ruling Ogoti said there was no sufficient reason to detain Peter Njuguna and Joseph Muringa.

The two are alleged to steal sh.2 million from the Sacco by virtue of employment.

Court ordered the police to charge the suspects before the end of Friday or each be released on a bond of sh. 500,000.

Gor Mahia ropes in seven new players as it eyes more for 2017 season

Nairobi, KENYA: Kenya Premier League bigwigs Gor Mahia has confirmed acquiring the services of seven new players as it continue to bolster its squad ahead of the 2017 season set to kick off next month, February.

The new signings are midfielder Oliver Maloba who has penned a three year contract from relegated side Nairobi City Stars, striker Jeconiah Uyoga from Technical University of Kenya TUK and John Ndirangu who crosses over from rivals AFC Leopards.

Others are midfielder Philemon Otieno, goalkeeper Shaban Odhoji who switched allegiance as a free agent from league rivals Ushuru FC and Kakamega High student Alpha Onyango, who has signed an initial four years contract with the club.

According to a statement posted on the club’s official website on Friday, the list is not final as the club is still looking to nail a few more transfer targets.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports claims that Gor Mahia has dropped ten players with captain Jerry Onyango, defender Jackson Saleh and striker Jacob Keli among those shown the exit door.

Gor Mahia is set to resume training next week before travelling to Sudan to face play hosts Al Hilal in a friendly match.

Kenya Premier League clubs are currently busy beefing up their squads before the transfer window shut down on 31st January.

Parents opt for second hand textbooks as schools re-open

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa second-hand book sellers are eating with a big spoon; as hundreds of parents and students are flocking their shops to buy textbooks during this school re-opening period.

Most parents have opted to go for second-hand books because of the double prices of text books witnessed in bookshops.

One parent told Baraka FM on Friday that despite the fair prices, the vendors also offer barter trade where they can exchange books their children have already used in lower/past classes.

“As long as the book is in good condition they accept it with a little fee in it which is really helpful to us”. Said Jones Makau.

One Mary, a vendor said that since she started the second hand selling business in 2013 she has made a lot of profits.

“I begun this job back in 2013 and it has really helped me because I have raised my two children and been able to put food on the table, I thank God and I hope to extend my business as time goes by.”Said Mary Njenga.

Parents have called on the government especially the Ministry of Education led by Dr Fred Matiangi to lower the cost of books during the re-opening of schools.

“If the government can intervene and do away with the bookshop owners who double the prices of the books whenever the schools reopen it can be relief to us parents because we are struggling so much with this hard life.” Said one parent, Celestine Mwaura.

Kampala, UGANDA: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated Uganda Cranes after it was picked as the African national team of the Year for 2016.

In the Confederation of Africa Football CAF awards gala held at the International Conference Center in Abuja on Thursday night, Uganda fed off competitions from DR Congo and Senegal to claim the fete.

The achievement did not only enthrall Ugandan supporters, but also President Museveni who took to his Facebook page to applaud his boys for a job well done.

‘’Congratulations to Uganda Cranes for winning the National Team of the Year Award and Dennis Onyango for emerging African Footballer of the Year (based in Africa) at the GLO CAF Awards last evening in Abuja. Uganda is proud of you!’’ read the post.

Under the tutelage of the Serbian Milutin Sredojević, Uganda posted a glittering performance in 2016 that saw them qualify for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations after 38 years of waiting.

To sum up the night, Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango who won African club championship with South African club Mamelodi Sundown last season, also took home the African footballer of the year accolade for players based in Africa.

Leicester City and Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez beaten Gabon and Borussia Dortmund Dortmund strike Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Liverpool and Senegal forward Sadio Mane for African best foreign based player award.

Section of Kenyan’s file petition challenging Wabukala’s suitability as EACC chief

Nairobi, KENYA: Retired Anglican archbishop Eliud Wabukala is facing hurdles to clinch the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission  chair position, after a section of Kenyans filed petitions challenging his suitability.

But appearing before Parliamentary Justice and Legal Affairs committee Wabukala said that he will not be swayed with pressures from any quarter while discharging his mandate if he sails through.

While undergoing vetting before legal affairs committee chaired Samuel Chepkonga, Wabukala
downplayed allegations by some Kenyans, including those who petitioned his suitability in running the commission, by pointing out that the anti corruption steering committee which he chaired performed effectively despite the fact of being underfunded.

Gilbert Mukabane,Eric Abuu ,Jerambe Munuhe and John Mbugua alleged that they don’t consider Wabukala to be suitable in the position of EACC chair, arguing that the committee under performed despite the fact that his committee received millions of money to fight graft.

He insisted that he will be steadfast in discharging his duties as EACC chair and will not allow external pressures to interfere with the commission while undertaking his duties.

Senate passes controversial Election Laws

Nairobi, KENYA: The Senate on Thursday voted to adopt amendments to the election laws as passed by the National Assembly.

Twenty-four senators voted for the bill, while 19 voted against it during its second reading.

“The ayes 24, the nays are 19, abstentions nil; the ayes have it,” Speaker Ekwee Ethuro said when voting concluded.

The Senate committee on legal affairs committee had earlier on Thursday adopted the controversial election laws after holding a public hearing.

According to the committee chairman members of public and other interested parties including The Independent Electrol and Bounderies Commission (IEBC), Attony general, Chambers of commerce, political parties, council of governors among others made written submission to the committee on the controversial amendments.

When tabling the report in Senate, the committee’s chair Amos Wako said members of the committee adopted the amendment to the election law after 10 senators voted for changes while 6 voted against.

He said the committee resorted to voting after senators failed to reach a consensus on the controversial amendments.

There was a heated debate as Senators retreated to their party cocoons as they debated a divisive report on the contentious Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2015.

The election laws amendments allow for a manual back up system to be in place in the coming General Elections.

Couple sentenced to 7 years in prison for being in possession of explosives

Mombasa, KENYA: A couple was on Wednesday sentenced to  seven years in prison by a Mombasa court after they were found guilty of being in possession of explosives.

Hassan Jilo Bwanamaka and Mwanasita Shee were found to be in possession of three grenades without legal authority in their house, located in Likoni Mombasa County in 2014.

Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Ruguru said the evidence in court was sufficient enough to convict the couple.

The court also acquitted them four other charges that they were facing, for lack of evidence.

They were accused of being members of the outlawed Mombasa Republican council.

They also faced another charge of being in possession of 305 fake papers that were allegedly being used to make sh. 1000 notes.

The couple was also was charged with being in possession of incitement letters, that sought to provoke violence in the country.

Joho slams President Kenyatta for hijacking projects to gain political mileage

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho on Thursday told off President Uhuru Kenyatta saying he is hijacking projects belonging to the Grand coalition government to score political points.

Speaking in Bamburi in Mombasa on Thursday, Joho castigated the Jubilee government saying most projects President Kenyatta is launching were started by the Grand coalition.

According to Joho, Kenyatta is playing politics to win 2017 elections yet there are no projects he has initiated since he came to power in 2013.

“Let me say this, its political season again. Most projects were started by the last governments,” he said.

He also challenged the Jubilee administration to show Kenyans projects that it has started ever since it came to power.

“Let Uhuru show us projects done by Jubilee in 2016. Some people say we talk ill of the government which is not the case”, he added.

Joho was speaking during the Commissioning of  the Mombasa Storm Water Drainage Improvement Project Phase 2 in Bamburi.

The governor’s remarks come a few hours after President Kenyatta officially commissioned the Buxton Footbridge Non-Motorized Transport Project in Mombasa.

However, President Kenyatta who watched while Joho was making the remarks did not respond to him.

The president also commissioned the Ziwa la Ng’ombe Informal Settlement Infrastructural Improvement Project,Uhuru Kenyatta and officially opened the Mackinnon Meat Market which had been restored by the National Youth Service.
