Ethnicity and tribalism are enemies of Cohesion, says Archbishop Kivuva

Mombasa,Kenya:The archbishop of Mombasa Martin Kivuva has blamed lack of cohesion in the country on tribalism and ethnicity.

While speaking during the launch of the Lenten civic education materials by the Catholic Justice commission at the Holy Ghost  cathedral in Mombasa, Kivuva urged religious leaders to play their role promoting cohesion in the country by preaching peace.

The archbishop also urged young people to desist from being used by politicians to destabilize the country but instead urged them to be ambassadors of peace.

“The country cannot be stabilized through divisions that is created by unconcerned Kenyans.” Said Kivuva.

In regards to the famine that has rocked several parts of the country, the archbishop urged Kenyans to come out in large numbers to donate food to the hunger stricken.

The  Deputy Governor  of Mombasa Hazel Katana  who was also present at the event applauded the move by the catholic church highlighting that peace is the bedrock of any successful country.

Katana who recently decamped to the Jubilee Alliance party   called on political parties to play their role in the peace process so as to avoid a repeat of the  events of the aftermath of the  2007 general elections.

“We do not to experience what happened in 2007. Kenyans are crying for peace.”She said.

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar has insisted that there is no rivalry between ODM and Wiper party owing to the fact that there has been defections from one party to another.

Omar who is also Secretary General of Wiper has rubbished claims that the two parties are in a competition to win members;adding that they are all under NASA coalition.

Addressing journalist at his Mombasa office on Friday, Hassan said they had no issue with ODM as anybody is at will to join any party.

“We are part of one house and so Wiper will not turn away anyone who seeks to be part this party whether it is from within or from outside the coalition.” Said Omar.

Omar added that he also wanted to make it clear that former Cabinet Minister Chirau Makwere did not defect from ODM as alleged by other media outlets; saying that he was not registered as an ODM candidate.

Meanwhile, Wiper has extended its deadline for registration for one as a party member; to 11th of March  after receiving request to push its deadline from 3rd march.

“This will be the final extension we shall not issue any other; as we need to start submitting for gazettement  to the IEBC list, for those who will be participating in the party primaries on 26th March.” Said Omar.

When asked whether there will be any joint nomination in NASA, Omar said that at under no point will that happen and that they will try their best to field a candidate in all the contested seats in every county.

One of the key ODM leaders that have moved to Wiper Party is Former Langata MP and Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly Farah Maalim.

Upon his defection in December last year, Maalim was the chairman of the ODM disciplinary committee and was actively involved in the expulsion of nine ODM members who had defected to Jubilee and other parties.

Maalim’s bid to  unseat  Garissa Town constituency MP, leader of majority in the National Assembly and a strong Jubilee proponent Aden Duale, has been complicated by Raila Odinga’s move to endorse Mr Nassir Dolal as an ODM candidate for the seat early last month.

Mombasa residents call for the end of doctor’s strike

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa residents have urged the central government to put measures to solve the  doctors strike that has paralyzed most of the health services in public hospitals

Speaking to Barakaa FM on Friday, most of them have said the strike is largely affecting them and  citizens countrywide leading to deaths and suffering among the people.

“Let the government recognize the interests and requirements of its citizens and ensure it solve the issue immediately.People are dying while the government seems to show nothing in resolving the strike,” said John Okumu, a carpenter.

Moses Katana , a tuk tuk driver, said that in the past three weeks he witnessed the impact of the strike when his friend died after not being attended to by doctors at Coast General Hospital.

“Recently our beloved neighbour who had taken poison died, another patient was taken to Coast General Hospital for failing to afford the hospital bill at Pandya hospital,” lamented Moses.

This emerges after the Court of appeal judge Martha Koome on Thursday granted the Inter-religious Council of Kenya the request to be given two days to negotiate in an attempt to end the strike.

The Court of Appeal had earlier directed the KMPDU officials, the Council of Governors, LSK and KNHCR to have talks to restore normalcy in the public health sector.

The court said the case will be mentioned on Tuesday next week.
