Boni residents threaten to skip elections, cite neglect by leaders

Lamu, KENYA: Lamu residents from the Boni minority community have threatened to boycott and not take part in this year’s general elections claiming they have been neglected by their leaders.

The residents from Bargoni ward have sworn not to vote in the coming elections saying their leaders had disappeared for the last five years since they took office and were only coming back now that  another election period had come.

They said area MP Julius Ndegwa of Lamu west, woman rep Shakilla Abdalla and area MCA Abdul Kassim Ahmed had never set foot in their village at Bargoni ever since they took elective office.

They also said they had never received any sort of help from the leaders even at this current period when the community is faced with a hunger crisis due to the drought and said they were tired of being used as free tickets to get greedy people to power while they remain wallowing in poverty.

The Boni council of elders have now said they are in the process of mobilizing all Boni people across Lamu to boycott this year’s elections.

“ We are tired of false promises every election year, our MP,Woman rep and MCA have never come back here since we elected them.we have had many problems and challenges that required their intervention and input but they were nowhere to be found.but apparently recently they have shamelessly began coming back with their usual sweet tongue but this time round, they shall be greatly disappointed because we don’t plan to vote at all,”said Doza Dizo,a head man.

Over 3000 Bonis have been registered as eligible voters in the recently concluded mass voter registration exercise.

“ As elders we plan to do all we can to ensure no single person from the Boni community casts their vote for any given person.they don’t deserve it.not one,” he said.

They also said they would not allow the three leaders to carry out campaigns in their areas saying “they had nothing new to show”.

Has You Tube removed Otile Brown’s music videos from the channel?!

When you try searching for music videos of famous Mombasa artiste Otile Brown on his You Tube page you will notice that there are none.

A spot check by Baraka FM revealed that no single song from the ‘Niseme Nawe’ hit maker can be found on the popular channel.

Rumors had it that the reason for that move might have been Otile’s beef with his manager Dr. Eddy.

However, speaking to Baraka FM’s Mega breakfast on Thursday,  Otile Brown denied having a rift with his manager.

He also denied that his songs have been removed from YouTube clarifying that the songs have only been made private.

“My songs have not been removed from YouTube. They have only been made private. They have been muted by VEVO. They want to give me a better deal,” he told the Mega breakfast.

Otile said VEVO will take over his accounts just like they have done Ali Kiba and Diamond’s songs.

“I want to move from Ngoma label that are currently uploading my songs to VEVO. Let nobody lie to you that we have disagreed with my manager; everything is fine,” he said.

He however promised to issue an official statement after ‘sorting out’ some issues.

Vevo is an American multinational video hosting service founded on December 8, 2009.

Vevo hosts music videos from both Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment syndicated on YouTube and its website, with Google and Vevo sharing advertising and similar benefits.

NLC begins review of Lamu sand dunes “grabbers” land tittles

Lamu,KENYA: Officials from the National Lands Commission-NLC led by chair Muhammad Swazuri and those of the Water Resources Management Authority-WRMA are currently in Lamu to review the over 100 land titles belonging to individuals said to have grabbed the Shella and Kipungani sand dunes with a view of revoking them.

The sand dunes at Shella and Kipungani are the only fresh water reservoirs serving over 10,000 residents of Lamu Island.

NLC and the water agency are working together to ensure all water towers in Lamu are conserved and protected.

In a recent newspaper advert,NLC published names of individuals required to appear before the commission on 1st and 2nd March with documents proving their ownership of the dunes and show cause why the parcels of land should not be revoked.

Swazuri had earlier on warned that the dunes being the only source of fresh water should not be interfered with and directed those who had grabbed and put up residential houses on the water catchment areas to leave voluntarily or be forced out.

Swazuri said the agency was working with the WARMA to ensure all water towers in Lamu are conserved.

The NLC chair explained that according to scientists, construction on sand dunes destroys the filters which separate the clean water from the salty ocean water, thus residents cannot access clean drinking water.

Lamu Island has been habited for almost 1, 000 years due to the availability of water but that is under threat since the only water catchment has been degraded by the grabbers who are putting up developments.

Several key figures including a gubernatorial aspirant and formers MP,MCAs,county executives and foreigners have been listed and are set to appear before the commission.

Most of those who appeared before the commission at the Lamu Fort on Wednesday did not have possess adequate documentation to prove the exact acreage and location of their lands on day one.

They  had to be sent back and ordered to supply the two commissions with sufficient documentation to that effect failure to which the NLC shall proceed and have their ownership revoked.

Lawyers who had also appeared to represent their clients before the commissions had to also be stopped midway in their presentations after it became clear that they did not have proper documentation and were also ordered to furnish the commission with the same on day two of the proceedings on March 2nd.

While leading the exercise,NLC deputy chair Abigail Mbagaya has also warned lawyers and the listed individuals against presenting fake documents after it emerged that most of the documents including allotment letters and certificates were issued without following due procedure.

There were also cases of fake signatures encountered on most of the documents seen by the commission.

“The purpose of this review of titles is to understand procedures followed in acquiring deeds for the land in question. We intend to carry out revocation if they don’t substantiate claim of ownership,” said Mbagaya.

Mbagaya questioned why most land owners had contradicting and doubtful land documentation.

“Its fishy to see the same person signing documents with different signatures.we shall hold those submitting such documents before this commission liable,”

Mombasa, KENYA: Civil rights groups in Mombasa have urged parents to pay constant visits to their children at school in order to get a basis on the teachings they receive in school.

The activist attributed violent extremism amongst children to parents paying little or no attention to their them.

He added that parents have not reserved ample time with their children back at home.

Honey farmers count losses over migration of bees due to drought

Lamu, KENYA: Honey farming which is the major economic activity of Lamu’s minority Boni community has completely collapsed following the migration of bees due to the ongoing drought.

The community says ever since the drought spell began all the bees have moved away and they are considered the key ingredients in honey making.

Speaking in Bargoni on Tuesday, the bee farmers said life has become tight following the collapse of their only trade which has seen them go for over ten months without harvesting a single drop of honey.

“Bees need water and flowers basically in order to make honey. Of course due to the drought that isn’t possible and as a result, the bees have completely migrated elsewhere leaving us with nothing to rely on. We are worried the bees might never come back even after the drought passes,” said Doza Diza.

Apart from honey farming, the Bonis are also known to be hunters and gatherers.

They however said even farming is impossible since most of the edible wildlife had moved away in search of water and food due to the drought and that wild fruits are no longer available in bushes and forests.

The community is appealing for relief food aid from the government and well-wishers.

According to Nixon Orwa of the World Wide Fund for nature-WWF which has been the main sponsor of bee farming for the Boni, climate change has a big role to play in what the community is going through.

“Climate change here is the issue;people are no longer sensitive to protecting the environment. A lot of damage is behind done that alters climatic conditions and resulting in what we are now witnessing all over the county and the world too, there is need for awareness creation of the need for conservation of the environment.” Said Orwa.
