‘’I don’t believe there is any officer who can ask for a bribe to let go an innocent Kenyan, that could be wrong and such officers doesn’t qualify to deserve the public,’ he asserted.

Negligence in IG Boinnet’s office denying justice to victims, says magistrate

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa senior magistrate Edigah Kagoni has accused the office of Director of Public Prosecution and the office of Inspector General of Police over the increased acquittal of suspects in Mombasa court.

Mr. Kagoni on Tuesday said that he had acquitted over eight suspects in the month of February due to insufficient evidence to convict them.

According to Kagoni, most of the investigative officers have failed to carry out intensive investigations thus making it hard for the prosecution to get evidence.

He further said the office of DPP was mandated to prosecute cases and requested senior officers to attend court proceedings to witness increased adjournment of matters in court.

Kagoni now wants the arms of the government to work together in order to restore justice in courts.

“Increased withdrawal of cases in courts only leave accused persons happy as the complainants continue to blame the court for denying them justice,” he said.

He ordered the ruling typed, certified and served to the county commander, DCIO and the office of DPP.

Tana River, KENYA: Health workers strike across Tana River County on Tuesday entered its second day, with them demonstrating over pending allowances.

Speaking to the media, chairman for association of public health officers in the county Raphael Gwiyo alleged that the county government had let them down after failing to fulfill their promises.

The chairman said that the county government had promised to pay the health workers’ dues in the course of last week but never did so.

On Monday, the demonstration started from the Hola County hospital which was the meeting point of all clinical officers, public health officers with other cadres.

The agreed plan was to make sure the workers were to see none other than the governor himself in order to get directives from the horse’s mouth.

According to Gwiyo,County Secretary Mr. Abdu Godana Dae had ignored their outcry, lamenting that instead of trying to find a solution before it could worsen, he decided to cut off communication unreasonably.

“We waited for the county secretary until he came at around 5:00 pm we talked and he promised us he would meet us by Tuesday or Wednesday of last week. After we had prepared to meet him on Tuesday he failed, saying he had traveled but he communicated later that he would meet us on Wednesday at 9:00 am. When we went to his office he said he was busy due to the US ambassador’s visit but after that we could neither see him nor get him through phone. That’s why we have decided to come here to hear from governor himself,” Mr. Gwiyo said.

The Chairman insisted that if they won’t be able to see him (the governor) they will continue camping at his office without any service delivery at the county hospitals even if the strike would last for a month or so.

The chairman added that the government should consider all the workers indiscriminately, saying clinical officers with other workers are supposed to be paid their allowances  just like the nurses.

Lamu, KENYA: One more person has succumbed to a Dysentery outbreak in Pandanguo village of Lamu county.

The 14 year old boy identified as Abdalla Said succumbed shortly after arrival at the Pandanguo dispensary on Monday evening.

Last Saturday, an 8 year old boy identified as Yahya Swaleh Bakari also died from the dysentery outbreak.

At least 20 more people have been admitted at the Witu hospital and Pandanguo dispensary after exhibiting symptoms of dysentery that includes vomiting and excreting blood.

The latest victim in the outbreak is said to have succumbed just hours after he took ill and was rushed to the health facility.

Confirming the deaths in Lamu on Monday,Lamu county health executive Mohamed Kombo said a team health officers had already been dispatched to contain the situation at the village.

Earlier on at the onset of the outbreak, blood and stool samples obtained from some of the patients had been sent to the government chemist in Mombasa to ascertain the illness behind the rampant cases of vomiting and diarrhea that had initially been reported.

Kombo however said the results were back and that the samples had tested positive for Dysentery.

“We have now ascertained that the outbreak is dysentery which seems to have been brought about due to consumption of dirty contaminated water by those in drought hit areas like Pandanguo. We have sent our team to the ground to contain the situation and we expect things to be better soon,” said Kombo.

He said the health department had also embarked on treating boreholes, wells and other sources of water in order to curb a similar outbreak.

Kombo said the dispatched team of health workers as also been mandated to move from house to house and distribute water treatments among villagers.

Locals have complained of inadequate attention from the doctor and the other health officers assigned to the village since they have to close work early due to security concerns in the area.

“The doctor and the other officers report to work at 9am then close up by 3pm. Unfortunately for us,that’s when we really need them as many people get sick especially at night, then we have no way to help the sick. If they really want to help they should do this around the clock after all its an outbreak we are talking about,” said Adan Golja, the village headman.

Pandanguo village is home to over 2000 residents from the Boni minority group.
