Only four political parties have published their manifestos, shows report

Nairobi, KENYA: A report by Youth Agenda indicates that only four political parties out of eight, have published and put their manifestos online.

In a media briefing in Nairobi on Monday, Youth Agenda chief executive officer Susan Mwongera said that the National Alliance party ,Jubilee party, ThirdWay Alliance and Prof Michael Wanaina who is an independent candidate are the ones who published their manifestos.

“We note with concern that of the 8 presidential candidates’ cleared by IEBC to participate in the 8th August general election ,only 4 had manifestos published and available online at the time of content development.” Mwongera said.

Some of the parties which did not publish their manifestos include Cyrus Jirongo’s United democratic party, Joe Nyagah who is an independent candidate, Abduba Diba’s Alliance for real change among others.

Mwongera said that on youth unemployment, Jubilee party and prof Wainaina articulated the specific youth policy and programmatic actions to be undertaken with a clear mention on the youth.

She said that NASA and Thirdway Alliance have captured job creation and interventions but not highlighted how the youth as a constituency will benefit.

Tackling sports mismanagement and arts ,Mwongera indicated that all manifestos have clear indications of their plans to prioritize and safeguard Kenya’s sports and art.

However ,the youth Agenda urged presidential and gubernatorial candidates to take note on the youth’s interests and have them in their policy formulations and implementation for the sake of development of the country.

It also demanded that whoever wins presidential office come August 8 ,must accelerate payment of youth entrepreneurs who have rendered various services to the government.

Mwongera, urged the youth to vote wisely and avoid being misused by the politicians during elections.

Nairobi, KENYA: Cabinet Secretary for Water and Irrigation Eugene Wamalwa on Monday flagged off 130 students to Israel  for further training on agricultural skills.

This is the second batch of students to go to Israel, after the first group that left in 2015 came back.

Speaking in Nairobi, Wamalwa said that such an initiative is key in curbing the hunger crisis being witnessed in the country.

“The country is almost arid and semi arid in some places and as the population increases the water scarcity increases, thus, you are the next soldiers to help tackle this when you come back in the country.” Said Wamalwa

The CS said he believes that after the training, some of them will be deployed in various county governments in order to enrich the counties with skills that will enable them in yielding food production sufficiently.

Wamalwa added that, the government will gear up in expanding the Ghalana Kulalu irrigation scheme by 400,000 from 500,000 hectares and build a dam that will boost irrigation process and increase food production in the near future.

He added that the first half a million acres of land in Ghalana Kulalu produced 37 million of maize bags that forced the country to look for 700 million more to curb the scarcity that had been occasioned.

On the other hand, Israel ambassador to Kenya Yahel Vilan, stated that by Kenya adopting this technology,it will enable them to be able to feed its people adequately.

The government is said to spend 3 billion shillings in order to facilitate the programme for the next 6 months.

Kenya Railways to introduce new measures to combat ticket fraud

Mombasa,KENYA:Kenya Railways will soon include passenger details on the SGR train tickets  in a bid to curb fraud and middlemen who are said to have frustrated customers booking tickets at the station.

In a newspaper notice sent out on Sunday, the corporation said it was in the process of revising its ticketing mode while introducing online ticketing services.

“We are also in the process of revising the ticket format, and we will soon be rolling out a new version of the tickets incorporating passenger’s details, thus addressing the issue of unscrupulous purchase and resale of the tickets at a premium,” the Kenya railways said in the statement.

“Kenya Railways would like to inform the members of the public that we acknowledge and take seriously the concerns raised about the mode of ticketing in use on the Madaraka Express Train Service,” Read another part of the statement.

There have been complaints from customers using the SGR which was launched by president Uhuru Kenyatta in early June.

Customers have to personally show up at the station and book 2 days in advance so as to get a ticket and that is not an assurance.

With an economy ticket going for sh.700, middlemen purchase the ticket for sh.700 and  sell them for over sh 900. However, the corporation which has been urging customers not to buy the tickets from middlemen has revealed the steps its taking to address that.

“To address the concern, we are working to introduce other modes of payment as a top priority; this includes online ticketing. Mobile applications will also be considered as a component of the online module to address the situation.” Read the notice.

The notice comes a few days after 7 people were charged at a Mombasa court for selling SGR tickets without an authorization from the corporation.

Women Rep calls for lifting of cashew nut export ban in Lamu

Lamu, KENYA: Lamu women rep Shakilla Abdalla has asked the national government to lift a nine year old cashew nut export ban imposed on farmers in the county.

Shakilla said the ban which was imposed way back in 2009 by the then Agriculture Minister William Ruto has led to the collapse of cashew nut farming in Lamu.

The ban forbids cashew nut farmers from exporting and selling the crop to outside markets in what had been considered as a move to revive local industries.

Speaking in Lamu town on Monday ,Shakilla said there was need for the ban to be lifted as it was no longer helpful and had damaged the cashew nut industry.

Back then, only the National Cereals and Produce Board of Kenya-NCPB had the authority to purchase raw nuts from the farmers.

Farmers in the major cashew nut growing areas in Lamu that are Mpeketoni,Witu and Faza having incurred huge losses have so far quit and embarked on other ventures since they no longer have a ready market locally for their produce.

Shakilla said farmers have been demoralized and that the ban has done too much damage that will take long to be undone.

“Nine years is too much time for any given ban to still be in existence. It has closed all market doors even for those subsistence sellers and the situation is very unfortunate. This is one industry that was doing so well and farmers were getting good money,” said Shakilla.

The women rep said shortly following the ban, many farmers who had stocked up their stores with cashew nuts encountered huge losses since they were unable to sell and as a result tones of kilos of cashew nuts were destroyed killing the morale of many.

She called on the government to lift the ban in order to enable for the resuscitation cashew nut farming which she said would change the fortunes for Lamu county.

Many farmers have also uprooted cashew nut trees from their farms since they see no hope for the produce to do well again where they can get value for their money as long as the ban is still in place.

“I don’t understand why the cashew nut ban is still on here in Lamu after all no one is doing cashewnut farming as well as they used and therefore the government can as well just lift the ban to enable for the revival of the industry.”  Said Shakilla.

There are over 10,000 cashewnut farmers in Lamu who have so far been rendered dormant due to the existing ban.

A number of farmers have however been able to preserve some of the produce and are hopeful of exporting it at good prices if and when the ban is lifted.

Shakilla also called on the county government of Lamu to set up a cashew nut factory in the county and also assist farmers source for ready foreign and local markets for their produce.

She criticized the ban terming it a failed intervention as it had led to the collapse of the industry and had failed to open up local markets for farmers.

“Middlemen have taken over and we all know what that means.Farmers are exploited and since they have no other option ,they give in to selling their produce at very low prices.A kilo of cashew nuts that went for Sh.70 has drastically gone down to as low as Sh 20 a kilo,” said Shakilla.

Woman jailed 10 years over luring minor into prostitution

Mombasa,KENYA:A woman who lured a 13 year old girl into prostitution has lost her appeal after  the high court  in Mombasa ruled the sentence she was serving was satisfactory.

Rehema Kabibi Mwarabu had appealed a 10 year imprisonment saying the sentence was harsh since she pleaded guilty thus saving judicial time.

Ms Kabibi was charged with benefiting from prostitution, luring minors into prostitution and sexual assault contrary to  the sexual offense act.

In her ruling Lady Justice A.Oginjo said the lower court had established a satisfactory ground for her sentence.

Kabibi first denied the charges and released on a bond of sh.300, 000, but later requested court to again  read charges to her and pleaded guilty to all charges.

She committed the offense in Bamburi area in Mombasa on 19 July 2014.
