World Tong-Il Moo-Do Federation President Grand Master Takamitsu Hoshiko has called on the government to continue supporting the Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do Championships.

This is after the 12th Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do International Martial Art Championship was canceled due to delayed funding from the Ministry of Sports.

Speaking in Mombasa during the closing ceremony of the Mombasa Open 2024 International Friendly Tournament, Grand Master Hoshiko said the international tournament was key in moving Tong-Il Moo-Do to the next step.

“This tournament is very important, it is an international tournament and we invited athletes from all over the world. This tournament is also the stepping stone to go the African and ultimately the Olympic games,” said Grand Master Hoshiko.

While lauding the athletes’ performances, Master Hoshiko said Tong-Il Moo-Do was not only about competing but also educating the youth on how to use their energy more constructively and promote peace.

“The athletes showed such great fighting spirit and also showed their sincere hearts to develop their skills and character,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kenya Tong-Il Moo-Do national team ‘Jasiri’ has also urged the government to put more consideration into facilitating the Mombasa Open Tournament.

“We were prepared to participate in this year’s Mombasa Open as we have always done in the previous years, unfortunately, the funds from the Ministry were delayed,” said Jasiri Captain Elvis Malipe.

The Captain said the Mombasa Open Tournament provided good exposure for Kenyan Tong-Il Moo-Do athletes.

“The Mombasa Open Tournament can accommodate more athletes compared to other events happening in foreign countries because it is easier for athletes to come to Mombasa than have the government send athletes for games outside the country,” said Malipe.

He also said Jasiri will be ready to compete in case of any developments.

“We have hope, the year is not yet over. If they come up with new dates for the tournament, we will be ready to defend our title. We have sharpened our skills and technique and are ready to fly the Kenyan flag high,” said the Captain.
