The second edition of the Speaker’s Cup tournament is set to kick off this Saturday.

The tournament which will keep Mombasa youth busy for the next three months will kick off with a match between Miritini and Changamwe at Magongo ground.

“The Speaker’s Cup is a tournament we organized with Members of County Assembly (MCAs). We hope to do it for the next five years to keep our youth from crime and drug and substance abuse,” said Mombasa Speaker Aharub Khatri while launching the tournament during the 2023 Mombasa International Show.

There will be 32 teams participating in this year’s tournament. Each ward will produce a team to make 30; the other two will be the County Assembly and Executive teams.

“All teams will be given jerseys and balls and we have agreed with the MCAs to provide them with transport,” said the Mombasa County Assembly Speaker.

The tournament will be played at the grassroots level and it is expected to run until !6th December when the finals are set to be played.

“The winners will be awarded sh.500k, the first runners-up will get 300k, and the second runners-up will receive sh.150k. There will also be other prizes to be won like ‘best player’, ‘top scorer’, and others,” added Khatri.

The pre-Speakers Cup finals were held in Jomvu pitting PSG from Bangladesh against Golden Boys from Mikindani.
