Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will make history in Serie A this weekend when she takes charge as the first female center referee to officiate the Italian top tier.

The 31-year-old who was promoted to the Italian refereeing league this season will be officiating Sassuolo’s match against Salernitana on Sunday, the body of the referees has announced.

Ferrieri Caputi became a professional official referee seven years ago and was promoted to Serie C league five years later.

She also refereed a Serie B match last year and has experienced a Serie A league club when she managed to officiate Cagliari against Cittadella in Italian cup last December where she disallowed three goals during that game.

Caputi will be the sixth female referee to take charge in males top five league across Europe after Stephanie Frappart (French league 1 and Champions League), Bibiana Steinhaus (Bundesliga), Natalie Aspinall, Wendy Toms and Sian Massey-Ellis (Premier League).
