The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is ready for tomorrow’s (29th August 2022) gubernatorial elections.

The Wafula Chebukati led team on Sunday distributed election materials to different sub-county tallying centers in preparation for the gubernatorial elections.

IEBC will be carrying out elections in eight electoral areas on Monday following postponement due to court orders and mismatch of material content.

The Monday elections will be carried out in: Mombasa and Kakamega counties, Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, Pokot South and Rongai constituencies, and Kwa Njenga and Nyaki West wards.

Earlier this week, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said day schools in Mombasa and Kakamega counties will be closed on Monday for the elections, learners are expected to resume classes on Tuesday 30th August 2022.

“In terms of the children, because we do not want them to miss any more time, we have agreed as a government that the boarding schools will not be closed, they will not be interfered with,” said Prof. Magoha.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i declared Monday a public holiday in the eight electoral areas for the elections.

Matiang’i urged employers to release their employees who are registered voters in the said areas so that they can vote.

“Under the Employment Act, it is a criminal offence for any employer to fail to release their employees to vote,” read the gazette notice.
