Matiang’i declares Monday a public holiday in Mombasa and seven other areas

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared Monday the 29th of August, 2022, a public holiday in Mombasa, Kakamega and six other electoral areas.

The Interior CS declared Monday a public holiday in; Mombasa and Kakamega counties, Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, Pokot South and Rongai Constituencies, and Kwa Njenga and Nyaki West wards.

“IT IS notified for information to the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Government, pursuant to and in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 2(4) and 3 of the Public Holidays Act, read together with Articles 101 (1), 177 (1)(a) and 180 (1), of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, declares Monday, 29th August, 2022, as a public holiday in the electoral areas listed in the schedule hereto to afford voters in the said areas the opportunity to participate in the election of the County Governor, Member of Parliament and Member of County Assembly…” read a special gazette notice dated 25th August, 2022.

Matiang’i requested all employers around the country to release their employees who are registered voters in the eight electoral areas to enable them participate in the voting process.

“Under the Employment Act, it is a criminal offence for any employer to fail to release their employees to vote,” read the gazette notice.
