Omanyala and Antao, only Kenyans to win 100m gold at the Commonwealth games

Ferdinand Omanyala has won Kenya’s first gold in the Commonwealth games.

Omanyala clocked 10.02 to win Kenya’s first gold medal in the 100m race in the Commonwealth games in 60 years.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine came in second followed by Sri Lankan Yupun Abeykoon.

Omanyala is the eighth fastest man of all-time in the 100m race after clocking a time of 9.77 in Nairobi on 18th September, 2021.

Omanyala, who is Africa’s fastest man, becomes the second Kenyan to win the 100m gold medal after Seraphino Antao won it in 1962.

Antao, who grew up in Ganjoni and Makupa in Mombasa, was the first Kenyan athlete to win gold at an international level.

He won two gold medals in the 1962 Commonwealth games.

He succumbed to cancer in September of 2011.

The Kenyan sprinter died in London, United Kingdom.
