Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga has nominated Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua as his running mate in the August 8th general elections.
During his Monday announcement at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) in Nairobi, Raila referred to Karua as an exceptional leader with high principles.
“History is calling us to close the gender gap. As Azimio we have today taken a key step towards that end,” said the Azimio Presidential aspirant.
The nomination came after an interview process by the Azimio running mate selection panel that took place last week.
The 11-member selection panel chaired by Noah Wekesa submitted three names to Raila Odinga on Thursday after the interviews.
10 candidates were interviewed for the position; Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, Narc leader Charity Ngilu, Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Chege, Former Gatanga Member of Parliament Peter Kenneth, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui and National Liberal Party’s Stephen Kipkiyeny Tarus.
“I accept this nomination as deputy presidential candidate. I am ready to walk as your deputy and to support you in our shared ideals,” said Martha Karua during the nomination announcement.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga also nominated five others for Cabinet Secretary positions, in his Monday announcement.
Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka was nominated for the Chief Cabinet Secretary position, Peter Munya as Agriculture CS, Wycliffe Oparanya got a nomination for the Treasury CS position while Kenneth Marende was nominated for the Speaker position.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on the other hand has been nominated for the Lands CS position.
Kalonzo unveils Deputy Presidential Candidate
Meanwhile, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka seems to have ditched Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance and will be running for the top seat with his Wiper party.
Kalonzo unveiled his running mate Andrew Leteipa Sunkuli as his Deputy Presidential Candidate in the August 8th general elections.
Kalonzo made the announcement on Monday at the SKM grounds in Karen.
He was among 11 candidates interviewed for the Azimio la Umoja-OKA running mate position.
