Police in Mombasa are investigating an incident where a 10-year-old boy drowned while swimming with friends in the Indian Ocean.

According to the Beach management Unit executive Chairman Ali Said the deceased had gone to swim on Thursday afternoon near Mkunazini, Simba Villa within Shelly Beach in Likoni Mombasa.

Ali said that a boy believed to have accompanied the deceased approached him and informed him that there was a body floating several kilometers from the offshore.

He informed others at the beach and they swam towards where the boy was lying in an attempt to rescue but found he was already dead.

The body was taken to Coast general hospital morgue pending autopsy and identification.

“The deceased’s forehead had a deep cut, an indication he might have jumped into the water and hit the corals. We also found his clothes offshore,” said Ali.

People who were at the beach during the incident are said to have escaped before police arrived at the scene.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, the government banned people from accessing the beach and according to the beach management units the directive is still in place.

Likoni Sub County police commander Jane Munywoki confirmed the incident saying they were yet to identify the body but they took it to the coast general hospital morgue.

“We removed the body and it has already been taken to the mortuary. We are yet to establish how the boy found himself at the beach as no one is allowed there,” she said.
