A village in Voi sub-county, Taita Taveta county has been sent into mourning after a hyena attacked and killed an 80-year-old woman on Saturday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, the 80-year-old woman who has been only identified as Christine was preparing supper at her house in Kajire village, Sagalla ward when the marauding carnivore attacked.
The hyena had accessed her house through her open door.
“A marauding hyena attacked and killed our grandma in the kitchen while she was preparing her meal last evening.” The relative said.
The relative added that her son who responded to the attack to try to rescue her sustained serious injuries after wrestling with the hyena for 20 minutes before neighbors joined to rescue the two embattled relatives.
However, it was already too late as the 80-year-old woman had already succumbed to the injuries while her son was rushed to the Moi county referral hospital.
Though the hyena was killed by the angry villagers, the incident has ignited a debate on human-wildlife conflict in the county where 60% of the land is occupied by the Tsavo East, Tsavo West national parks, and the Taita hills wildlife sanctuary.
Last year, a 12-year-old succumbed to her injuries after she was attacked by a lioness in Maungu area.
Hardly had the memories of the incident faded when a 68-year old woman sustained injuries after a buffalo attacked her in Mnengwa village.
The Kenya wildlife service has not yet commented over the incident.
