Mombasa, KENYA: Archbishop Emeritus of Mombasa John Njenga has passed on at the age of 90.

The most reverend passed away on Sunday, at Mater Hospital after a short illness.

Archbishop of Mombasa, Most Rev. Martin Kivuva has confirmed the news of his death.

“Dear brothers and Sisters, it is with humble submission to Divine will that I wish to inform you of the demise of our beloved Archbishop Emeritus John Njenga. He went to the Lord today, Sunday 4 Nov at 11:45 hrs” Archbishop Kivuva wrote.

“He will be remembered for his passion and immense contribution to the development of education in Kenya.” Kivuva added.

Archbishop Kivuva also recalled his selfless support to the needy and his involvement in charity work.

Archbishop Emeritus John Njenga was ordained priest at Kibosho Major Seminary in Tanzania in 1957.

He was later ordained as the Bishop of Eldoret in 1970, and in 1988  the Bishop of Mombasa, becoming Archbishop two years later.

“Plans for the funeral of Archbishop Njenga will be communicated at a later date.” Archbishop Kivuva added.

The late archbishop served as a Catholic priest for 56 years.
