Mombasa, KENYA: Dismas Ewet and Peris Cherono emerged the winners of the Safaricom Mombasa International marathon that was held on Sunday.
The race that had treasury square as its start and finish line attracted over 1500 athletes with a theme ‘Run for the Girl Child.’
Ewet , an Eldoret based Athlete finished the 42 kilometer race in 2:16:52 slightly ahead of Arit Kigen who finished the race in 2:17:45 and Abraham Too’s 2:18:13 in the mens race while in the women’s 42 kilometer race, Peris Cherono from Iten clocked the race at 2:30:44 slightly ahead of Alice Mogire’s 2:32:43 and Elizabeth Rumokol’s 2:32:53.
Cherono who is eyeing the Beijing Marathon slated for next year said it was her first time winning a marathon.
Stephen Mwendwa retained his title in the 10-kilometer men’s race with a finish time of 33:17:39 while Naomi Jepngetich emerged victorious with a 35:14:17 finish time.
The 42-kilometer race winners walked home with sh 500,000 while the 10-kilometer race winners went home with sh 40,000 each.
