Mombasa,KENYA:Coast residents were locked out of communication from the rest of the country on Sunday following a Safaricom network outage that lasted around 4 hours.

Residents relying on Safaricom for their day to day communication were forced to resort to other forms and modes as the Safaricom network suffered an outage that affected voice, SMS and general data services.

The service provider said, through a statement, that the outage was caused by multiple fibre link cut affecting critical transmission equipment.

“We wish to apologize to our customers and partners that are currently experiencing voice and data outage, caused by multiple fiber link cut affecting critical transmission equipment,” said the Statement.

The cut resulted in the loss of voice and SMS services in the Coast and Lower Eastern regions as well as general data, with some residents even thinking that their phones were the problem.

“I had already started budgeting for a new phone, luckily I found out that the problem was with the network,” joked one of the mobile network provider’s customer.

The problem has since been rectified.
