Four family members perish in Kilifi bodaboda accident


Kilifi,KENYA:Four members of  the same family  Monday perished in an accident at Mitangoni along Kaloleni- Mavueni highway on Monday.

The accident involved a trailer and a motorbike which was carrying the deceased.
Eye witnesses say the accident occurred when the bodaboda rider tried to overtake an oncoming lorry at a hilly sharp corner .
According to Abdallah Malingi, a witness of the accident, the rider accelerated even more after seeing the other lorry ahead of him instead slowing down and thats when he collided with the lorry.
“The accident occurred in the morning hours of Monday when the rider of the motorbike Karisa Chivatsi, tried to overtake at place restricted,” Malingi said.
“They deceased are all  members of the same family and they hail from Pendeza village in Ganze Sub County,” he added.
Three  of the victims have been identified as  Mercy Tabu Kasidi, 45 years, Dickson Nyoka 11 years and Zainab Katana 20 years.
It is also said the rider was inexperienced and  had not attended a driving school.
“The rider was not experienced and had not attended any driving school. This has been the trend for many boys in this are,” Malingi stressed.
Kilifi deputy OCPD Peter Mutuma confirmed the incident and said police will inspect all bodaboda riders to ensure they are qualified drivers from recognized driving schools.
“It’s sad to have occurred such a grisly accident. We are investigating the whole issue and we will  soon inspect all bodaboda riders to ensure they are all qualified,” Mutuma said.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to the  Kilifi County referral hospital Mortuary, pending an  autopsy.
