Mombasa,KENYA: President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to launch a new ferry MV Jambo that arrived in the country on Thursday.
This follows a court ruling that dismissed a petition seeking the procurement and purchase of a new vessel citing safety issues.
Transport CS James Macharia who received the ferry, said it has a capacity of 1,350 passengers and 60 vehicles.
The new ferry built in Turkey also has a toilet and seats in the upper deck.
“This ferry will operate forty trips per day carrying 60,000 people per day. With this, now we have six ferries in Likoni channel’, he said.
According to the CS, another ferry is still under construction and will arrive in the country in November this year.
