Mombasa,KENYA:Rowdy youths suspected to be part of a criminal gang on Tuesday burnt ballot papers which were mean for conduction of ANC party primaries in Likoni Mombasa county,police sources said.
The paraphernalia was burnt at Ushindi Baptist church in Timbwani area of Likoni when the party officials who had just alighted from a vehicle which was carrying the boxes, was confronted by a rowdy group who burnt the material without uttering any word.
Likoni deputy police Chief Anthony Shimoli confirmed the incident saying the officials were to blame.
“We are trying to find out what actually transpired,so far we haven’t made any arrest but investigations have been launched,the matter is with the DCI and culprits will be brought to book,”said the police boss.
He said an official who identified himself as Jimmy Atsango and also secretary general went to the police station at around 11 am asking for security,yet they had not alerted the police earlier about the exercise.
The party officers who were sent to the polling station on reaching the venue only found materials burning and with nobody around and they had to run away for their safety.
“We had not been notified in due time,the man who identifies himself as SG came here in the morning asking for security,he should have alerted us on time so that we can make prior arrangements,”the police boss said.
He said after the man asked for security he was turned away and told to go talk to the county commander.
The police boss confirmed that the exercise did not go on as all the materials were burnt.
