Nairobi, KENYA: Kenya Film Commission has blasted the Kenya Film and Classified Board for overstepping its mandate on licensing and banning of controversial film dubbed Rafiki.
In a media briefing in Nairobi on Friday, the chair of Kenya Film Commission Christopher Foot said that the KFCB has no mandate to license films in the country terming such a move as one way of overstepping the boards mandate.
He said that the KFCB has the mandate of rating the films in the country but not licensing.
He also blamed KFCB for banning films in the country especially Rafiki and yet in the first place it was licensed for production which the commission said that it supports its production.
“When it comes to the matters of regulatory ,please go to communications authority they are by far the best place to deal with that ,KFCB has clearly defined mandate which we respect and encourage which is classification and ratings .”Foot said.
Foot said that KFCB will demoralize the young talents in the film industry and there is need for the two organisations to undertake their mandate diligently to avert clash among them.
He said that there is need for the for the two bodies who are mandated to promote and oversee production of films in the country to a find a truce in order to enhance quality of films in the country.
The commission is also concerned about some counties which have increased the fees for filming urging them to find other ways of benefiting from the industry.
