Mombasa, KENYA: Police have shot dead three suspected juvenile criminal gang members in Likoni, Mombasa county.

The three were killed in Mweza area, Mtongwe Monday at around 4 pm.

Four other suspects escaped with bullet injuries and police are pursuing them.

Likoni police chief Benjamin Rotich confirmed to Baraka FM on Monday that the three were gunned down after a chase.

He said they were alerted by the public that there were some young criminal gang’s robbing people and attacking them with crude weapons.

“We deployed a contingent of officers in the area and when the officers arrived the suspects run into deserted houses, police pursue them and when they were told to surrender two of them drew machetes in an attempt to attack the officers,” said Mr. Rotich.

He said the three were gunned down on the spot as others escaped.

He suspects that they are members of outlawed wakalikwanza and wakaliwao criminal gangs terrorizing residents in the area.

This has raised the number of criminal gang members killed in Mombasa to 12 in the last one week.

The police boss credited the residents for raising the alarm adding that a crackdown on criminal gangs will continue in the sub-county.
