Over 143,000 mosquito nets out of 900,000 were not picked during mass distribution exercise recently concluded in Mombasa County.

Jomvu sub- County had the highest pick rate in all the sub-counties in the four-day event.

Mvita and Nyali sub-counties had few nets picked, according to Mombasa malaria coordinator Fatuma Dume.

In Likoni, residents blamed the hot sun for not showing up to pick their nets.

“They claimed the sun was too hot so most kept away. ” Dume said.

According to Dume, attempts to use wazee wa mitaa in reaching them proved futile.

“We even used wazee wa mtaa for door-to-door delivery but still they didn’t come out claiming it was too hot”, she stated

In total 84 % of Mombasa County residents picked their nets which is a success according to Dume.

The four-day mass net distribution targeted Mombasa County to reduce cases of malaria .
