TUM first year student drowns a week after admission

A first year Technical University of Mombasa student has died after drowning in the Indian ocean.

Fredrick Muriithi Lakena, a first year Mechanical Engineering student is said to have drowned at Nyali Beach on Sunday 1st October 2023.

According to a statement from TUM student leadership,  Muriithi was admitted to the university last week.

“As the student fraternity, we are in deep shock and we convey our deepest condolences to the family and the entire TUM fraternity,” read the statement from the Technical University of Mombasa Students Association (TUMSA).

In the statement TUMSA urged students to exercise caution when going to swim at the beach.

A candle lighting ceremony to mourn Fredrick will be held on Wednesday.
