Two die in a suspected terror attack in Lamu

Two people have died following a suspected terror attack in Lamu County.

The two died after suspected al-Shabaab terrorists attacked three civilian vehicles including one belonging to Hindi area Member of County Assembly.

“Today, at approximately 0740 hrs, suspected terrorists attacked travelers along the Lamu-Witu Garsen Highway, at Lango la Simba near the border of Lamu and Tana River Counties,” read a statement from Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

“Security personnel from the Nyangoro Forward Operating Base (FOB) who were conducting clearance patrols along the highway responded rapidly and an engagement with the approximately sixty (60) terrorists ensued, scattering them into the Boni Forest,” read the statement.

Nine people were injured with one sustaining life-threatening injuries, and several others have been reported missing.

“While a combined security operation of elite contingents of the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is currently underway, treatment of the injured as well as the search and rescue of missing civilians is ongoing,” said CS Kindiki in the statement.

Meanwhile, in Garissa County, suspected terrorists detonated an IED & fired assault weapons targeting a civilian vehicle along the road between Bambo & Jabi-bar injuring a civilian.
