Saudi Arabia produced one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history as they came from one nil down first half to smash Argentina in the opening game of match day three at Lusail Iconic Stadium.

Salem Al-Dawsari’s stunning solo effort secured a 2-1 victory over Argentina in Group C ending the Albiceleste’s 36-match unbeaten run in dramatic fashion.

Lionel Messi had given one of the pre-tournament favorites the lead from the penalty spot inside the first ten minutes which was then followed by three disallowed goals from the Copa American champions.

It took just three minutes of the second half for Saudi Arabia to square the score line from their first shot on target through Saleh Al-Shehri.

Despite there being plenty of time for Lionel Scalon’s side at least to grab one point, they made plenty of mistakes in their final thirds ending the match with a shocking defeat.

Saudi Arabia can now dream of advancing beyond a World Cup group stage for the first time since 1994 when they go down for their second and third match of group C.
