Owner of collapsed Ruaka building arrested trying to flee the country

Police have arrested the owner of a five-storey building that collapsed in Ruaka, Kiambu County, killing two people.

Jennifer Kamau, 59, was arrested at 2 am on Monday morning, as she attempted to flee from the country.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations sleuths based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) pounced on Jennifer minutes before she boarded a flight destined for Texas, in the United States of America.

“However, following the arrest, the woman was taken ill and rushed to a city hospital by our officers, where she is receiving treatment before being arraigned in court,” said the DCI.

In the incident that occurred in Ruaka on Thursday last week, two people lost their lives after a five-storey building belonging to the woman collapsed on an adjacent building, while tenants were asleep at around 3 am.

Another building in Ruiru, Kiambu County, collapsed hours after tenants were evacuated.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi ordered the evacuation of the over 100 tenants following reports of cracks in the building.

The five-storey building collapsed just hours after the collapse.
