At least 145 people died in road accidents between 18th and 26th September 2022.

According to the police, they have observed a sharp increase in fatalities among passengers.

“From our assessment, the increase was mainly attributed to preventable and predictable factors; non-usage of seat belts by commuters, driver behavior such as speeding leading to loss of control in high occupancy vehicles, and poor mechanical condition of vehicles resulting in brake failures and Tyre bursts, were some of the causes,” read the police statement.

According to police data, the number of road crashes between January and September this year increased compared to the same period in 2021.

This year, at least 3,541 died in road accidents compared to 3,286 in 2021, which was a 7.8 percent increase.

“The last couple of months have registered an increase in the number of road traffic accidents and unfortunately several road users have tragically lost their lives as a result while others are recuperating in hospitals, “ said the police.

In the period between 1st January and 26th September 2022, there have been 15,924 road crash victims.

Out of that number, 3,541 died while 7,236 were seriously injured. 5,174 were slightly injured.

“Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, motorcyclists, and pillion passengers are the most affected in these statistics,” said the police.
