Manchester United have suffered another huge blow to their ambition of signing Dutch midfielder Frankie De Jong as Barca president Joan Laporta made it clear on Wednesday that the player will remain in Spain next season.

In recent weeks, the 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer following the departure of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

The Spanish giants were ready to offload the midfielder due to their financial problems.

However, it appears that Laporta is ready to retain the services of De Jong, rather than cash in on his move to Old Trafford.

The latest comments from Barcelona on De Jong could cause a fresh panic at Manchester United as their transfer business continues to stall this summer.

United made their first signing of the summer on Tuesday, with the arrival of young left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.

United head coach Eric Ten Hag has admired De Jong’s service since joining the club as he looks to overhaul his new squad following their dire season last campaign.
