Mugoka (a khat) is the most preferred drug among 12 and 15 year olds in Mombasa County.
This is according to Reach out Trust Director, Taib Abdurahman when he spoke to Baraka FM on Monday.
Taib said a report they authored, shows that muguka is popular among the youth because it’s cheaper.
“It’s very saddening that even 12 year old boys have turned addicts. This is because they easily get the drugs cheaply on the streets”, he said.
Taib also pointed out that alcohol and bhang addiction is rampant in Mombasa.
Kisauni leads in cases of drug abuse, followed by Mvita, Likoni and Jomvu, according to Taib.
“All the six sub- counties have been affected with Kisauni leading in cases of addiction”, he stated.
He also urged the community to refrain from stigmatizing drug addicts who want to break the habit.
“Most of them fear seeking for help due to stigma hence remain drug addicts”, he said.
On Thursday, a section of Likoni residents gave a seven-day ultimatum to the government to expose drug barons in the area.
According to the residents, many young people have become addicted to drugs, which they say has affected their lives.
