Coastal residents ought to brace themselves over the anticipated heavy rainfall, the weatherman has warned.

According to the meteorological department, heavy rainfall at the coastal strip will be accompanied by strong winds of 20 knots and large waves of 2metres.

Among the areas of concern include Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Lamu, Tana-River and Taita Taveta counties.

The heavy rainfall of more than 30mm in the next 24hours is expected over the western, central regions including the Nairobi area too.

The department said that the rainfall is expected to spread to the southeast, northeast and northwest regions of Kenya on Saturday 18th April.


The heavy rainfall is projected to continue up to Sunday 19th April 2020. 
The intensity is likely to reduce by Monday 20th of April, 2020.

The department has instructed residents in all the mentioned areas are to be on the lookout for potential floods. 

“Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes. ” the neurological department warned.

The heavy rains, large waves and strong winds offshore may result in storm surges along the coast, hence fishermen and all in the Marine industry should be on high alert.

It urged people in landslide-prone areas like the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya and other hilly areas over the western region to be vigilant.
