An unidentified man was on Thursday morning gunned down as he tried to snatch a gun from police officer guarding a the First Community Bank located in Bondeni, Mombasa, security officials have told Baraka FM.
This is according to the Mombasa Urban police station OCPD Eliud Monara.
“The officer was going for a short call when the suspect attacked him from behind with a huge stone but did not manage to snatch a gun from him,” he said.
According to a witness who spoke to Baraka FM,the suspect snatched a gun from the officer and tried to shoot him but the gun was not cocked.
David Muthoni said that the police officer managed to take the gun back from the suspect and shot him dead.
“The suspect who is either of Somali or Boran origin was shot twice on the chest, another on his neck and his hand “he said.
The police officer is admitted at Coast general hospital where he is receiving treatment after he sustained injuries on his knees and back during the scuffle.
Police have also said that the suspect is not identified since he did not have any document.
His body was taken to the Coast Provincial General Hospital mortuary awaiting for his relatives to come and identify him.
According to a police statement seen by Baraka Fm, two police officers who have been identified as Joseph Njeru and Ally Ngala had been guarding the bank during the time of the incident.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted on the body.
This is the second time in less than five years a similar incident is happening .
In February 2015,a police officer guarding the Gulf Bank along Biashara street in Bondeni, Mombasa,was shot dead after his gun was snatched by unknown gunmen.
Simon Ochode was shot after his G3 ruffle was snatched from him as he guarded the bank.
