Mombasa man jumps off ferry because of debts

Mombasa, KENYA: A man who allegedly attempted to commit suicide in Indian Ocean in Mombasa, told the court that he had reached the decision following the challenges of life.

Peter Chege said he spent Friday night drinking alcohol in a bar within Mombasa town before he attempted to commit suicide while going home.

Chege pleaded guilty to the charges of attempting to commit suicide telling the court that he had a lot of debts.

The father of three further confessed to the court he has been living with HIV/AIDS since 2009 and he had tried to commit suicide severally.

“Your honor life is very difficult for me; I have a lot of debts and sometimes I’m unable to provide food for my family,” said Chege.

He allegedly jumped from MV Kilindini ferry which was about to dock in mainland.

Chege denied report that he was rescued by security guards saying that he knew how to swim and when things got tough he decided to swim.

Mombasa Senior Magistrate Martin Rabera cautioned the accused against trying to commit suicide and directed probation officers to submit report on 7th March before court gives sentence.
