Taita,TAVETA:Residents of Mlondo village ,Wundanyi constituency, Taita Taveta County woke up to a shocking incident on Thursday after a 97-year-old man was burnt beyond recognition over suspected witchery by another section of the villagers.
The angry residents claimed the old man Mwandisha Maza had given them sleepless nights forcing them to set him ablaze end the menace.
But area Assistant chief Vigilance Wamona dismissed witchcraft claims against the deceased, saying the old man had mental problem due to his advanced age.
“The old man was set ablaze after he was stashed in a tyre ,they suspected him to be a witch ,this current generation comprises of people who swim into action before ascertaining allegations, if we go this way we will be losing people especially the elderly to mob justice,” said Wamona.
She has called on Werugha residents to desist from taking laws into their hands but report any suspicious characters to the police for appropriate action.
