Lamu, KENYA: A Jubilee party MCA aspirant has been arraigned at the Lamu law courts on charges of incitement and assault.
Yahya Ahmed Shee alias Basode,32, who is vying for the Mkomani ward seat, is said to have together with others not before court taken part in unlawful riots outside the Lamu Law Courts on June 2 this year.
He also faces three separate counts of trying to rescue three suspects from police custody.
The MCA aspirant was on Monday summoned by the Lamu CID where he was grilled and recorded a statement before he was arraigned in court on the same day.
He is said to have incited a group of youths to riot outside the Lamu courts where they also assaulted police officers, as they tried to rescue prisoners who were being escorted by the officers to prison after they had been convicted and sentenced by resident magistrate Njeri Thuku two weeks ago.
Shee is accused together with others not before court of assaulting police officers in the struggle that ensued between the rioters and officers, when the latter group attempted to rescue suspects.
The court heard that on June 2 this year,Basode as he is commonly known together with others not before court engaged in unlawful riots outside the Lamu courts which led to fracas that resulted in the injuries of two civilians and two police officers.
Shee together with others not before court is also accused of forcefully trying to take suspects Zamzam Mohamed Salim,Ali Mzee Ali and Athman Yusuf Ali from police custody.
He together with others not before court also faces charges of physically assaulting police officers Fredrick Machini and Paul Musamuli who only were exercising the duty as per the law.
The aspirant denied all the charges and was released on a Sh.100,000 bond and surety of a similar amount.
The case will be heard at a later date.
