Kibwezi,KENYA:24 people died on Monday night in a grisly road accident in Kibwezi area along the Mombasa –Nairobi highway.
The accident involved a head on collision between a bus from the Buscar company that was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi, and a cooking oil tanker, Kibwezi O.C.P.D Leonard Kimaiyo, told Baraka FM.
“Those who died on the spot are 20 adults and three children. One other person died later in hospital,” said Kimaiyo.
The accident which is Kenya’s worst this year in terms of number deaths recorded in a single carnage, also left 19 people injured, Kimaiyo said, adding that the number of deaths could rise.
It occurred at Kambu area near Mtito Andei around midnight as the bus driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle.
The bus was carrying an unknown number of passengers and was headed to Mombasa from Nairobi.
Reports further indicate that the truck driver and the bus conductor were seriously injured and rushed to the Makindu Sub district hospital together with others injured.
