Mombasa,KENYA:More than three hundred catholic faithfuls from the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Mombasa have participated in the walk of the way of the cross to mark the end of the 40 days fasting period .

The walk that  started at  the Holy Ghost Cathedral church all along  Nkurumah road, through Mama Ngina Road and back to the church, lasting almost six hours.

Speaking to Baraka fm on Friday Joseph Mutua, the chairman of liturgy at the Holy Ghost Cathedral said it is a worldwide and historical event  celebrated by all catholic churches beginning from  central Rome.

“This is a universal event celebrated in all catholic churches starting from the  St Peters Vatican in Rome.” Mutua said.

Mutua added that they had had a six hour walk of carrying the cross that included fifteen stations going by the way of the cross and  that they had followed the way of the cross to the 12th station where it is believed that Jesus Christ died.

He noted that by carrying the cross, Catholics learn to carry other people’s burdens and more so being merciful to them reminding  them to think about the welfare of the less fortunate in society including the poor, the prisoners, the sick and the orphaned children.

“When we carry the cross we learn several lessons such as carrying other people’s burdens and practice mercy on others.” Mutual said.

The Easter holiday this year  will be celebrated  from  Good Friday on 14th  April and Easter Monday on 17th  April.
