Mombasa,KENYA:Budget airline Skyward express has launched direct flights from Mombasa to Lamu. In a  dinner  held at the Pride Inn Paradise beach resort in Mombasa, on Friday 7th April,  the airline announced the launch of flights that  will operate twice a day.

The flights are scheduled for 1030 hrs from Mombasa to Lamu and 1130 hours from Lamu to Mombasa for the direct flights and their maiden trip was made on 31st March. The airline which flies from Wilson airport is set to rival its direct competitor Jambo jet which flies from the Jomo Kenyatta international airport.

While speaking during the Launch their airline’s general manager Abdullahi Mohamed said that despite it being risky to fly directly to Lamu the response had been amazing so far.

“This was a risk worth taking. Since our inaugural flight on March 31, 2017, we have been recording full flights on the route from Mombasa and vice versa.”

Previously the flight was flying to Lamu but from Wilson airport in Nairobi but with other flights having a a stopover in Mombasa. The airline becomes the first airline to fly directly from Mombasa to Lamu as passengers have to travelling to Lamu from Mombasa  have to drive to Malindi airport in Malindi .

The launch comes a few weeks after the British government lifted a travel advisory against parts of Lamu county and the launch of the direct flights is expected to boost tourism to the Island which is  a UNESCO heritage site.
