Nairobi, KENYA: Sportpesa Premier League club Sofapaka FC has signed a one year sponsorship deal with gambling firm Betika worth Sh. 50m.
The deal, unveiled on Friday will see Betika become the official shirt sponsors of the club taking over from Blue Triangle Cement who ended its partnership with Sofapaka two years ago.
The 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions has endured tough times financially, leading to a number of its high profile players terminating their contracts citing lack of remuneration.
Sofapaka almost got relegated earlier this year after failing to comply with FIFA club licensing, lack of clear financing source being one of the factors the club could not justify.
It however got its way back into the top tier league, thanks to Sports Disputes Tribunal who ruled in favor.
Betika, become the latest betting firm to sponsor local clubs after Sportpesa who sponsors Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, as well as Betway who are the official Mathare United’s shirt sponsors.
