Man charged in court over attempted murder of lady ran over by train

Mombasa, KENYA: A man was on Monday charged in a Mombasa court for gang raping and attempted murder of a woman who was ran over by a train in February, leading to amputation of her limbs.

Court heard that Steven Otieno Okalu jointly with others not before the court, gang raped Ms. Irene Siongola then tied her on the railway line on 3rd February, 2017.

He is also facing attempted murder charges contrary to section 220 (a) of the penal code.

He denied the charges before Mombasa senior resident magistrate Edigah Kagoni.

 

Police officer from Makupa police station in Mombasa Dorothy Onditi, swore an affidavit in court opposing the release of Mr. Okalu on bail.

Ms Onditi in her affidavit, said the suspect did not have a mobile phone and it will be hard to trace him if he were to be released on bail.

She further said he was a flight risk with no a board and may leave jurisdiction.

Irene hit the headlines last month after narrating her rape ordeal that left her without limbs and a huge hospital bill at Aga Khan hospital amounting to sh. 2.1 M.
