Nairobi, KENYA: Kenya’s representatives in this year’s continental football posted mixed results with champions Tusker being knocked out in the preliminary round while Ulinzi Stars progressing to the first round.
Having drawn 1-1 at home to Mauritius’ champions AS Port Luis in the CAF Champions League first leg, Tusker needed victory to proceed to next level.
The Brewers showed glimpses in desire to achieve the fete away in Mauritius on Sunday when they took a first half 1-0 lead, only to lose momentum in the dying minutes conceding two goals in the last five minutes to lose 2-1.
The defeat saw Tusker tossed out on aggregate of 3-2 continuing Kenyan clubs poor outing in the competition for decades now.
Meanwhile, back at home Ulinzi Stars progressed to the first round of the CAF Confederation cup preliminaries by edging Al Hilal Benghazi of Libya 5-4 on penalty lotteries.
Ulinzi who lost 1-0 away to Al Hilal a fortnight ago won the reverse fixture by a similar margin hence the penalty shootouts.
The soldiers will now face off with Egypt’s Smouha in the first round of the preliminaries in another two-legged tie next month.
