Likoni gang attack victim succumbs to injuries

Mombasa, KENYA: One of the victims attacked by Watalia criminal gang on Saturday in Likoni, Mombasa has succumbed to his injuries.

The 40-year-old man identified as Joseph Leleshni died Sunday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Coast General hospital.

Medics who have been attending to the victim told Baraka FM on Monday the deceased had deep cuts in the head which affected his brain.

He was treated at Manyatta district hospital in Likoni before he was referred to Coast general hospital.

The other victim Nicholas Odhiambo who was hacked by the same gang is currently admitted at the ICU in Coast General Hospital, according to police.

About 100 criminal gang members of Watalia slashed three people in Jamvi la Wageni area in Likoni Saturday.

The gang is said to have been revenging the killing of their leader Mwalimu Subira alias Rogo, who was lynched by a mob in Soweto area Likoni.

According to eyewitnesses, the gang leader was caught by a mob trying to rob a businessman.

He was arrested and beaten to death.

Likoni Deputy police chief told Baraka FM five suspects are in police custody and are helping police with investigations.

“The victim succumbed to his injuries, he was seriously injured,” said police boss.

The five suspects arrested are likely to be charged with murder.

Watalia,wajuku wa bibi wakali kwanza and wakali wao are the most feared criminal gangs in Likoni and the entire Mombasa county.

The suspects most of them are juveniles armed with machetes, knives and other crude weapons and are mostly under influence of drugs.

Sunday top security officials led by Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa and county police commander toured Likoni police station where he met sub-county security chiefs over the matter.

According to an officer at the station who requested to remain anonymous, the security chiefs were not happy at all the way police responded to the attack by gang.

They later toured Jamvi la Wageni area where three people were slashed by the criminal gang.
