Mvurya petitions gov’t over Mwache dam compensation

Kwale County government is set to petition the national government over the compensation of landowners affected by the construction of the sh. 20 billion Mwache dam.

Addressing victims in Kinango on Tuesday, Kwale Deputy Governor Fatma Achani said the County government lawyers have been given the go-ahead to ensure all the victims sign an affidavit seeking a review of the compensation package.

“We urge all the community members and leadership to speak in one voice regarding the compensation of victims affected by the construction of Mwache Dam, “said Achani.

She further revealed that the County government will invite the national land commission to discuss the issue of compensation.

Victims affected by the construction of the Mwache Dam have alleged that they were threatened by the National Land Commission to sign compensation award letters.

According to the report the priority area covering between Fulugani and Mwachipa with a total of 624 victims, 609 victims had signed the award letters while in phase two a total of 736 victims had already signed the award letters out of 818 victims.

Kwale County governor Salim Mvurya accused some Coastal leaders of using the Mwache dam project for political mileage.

“I know some leaders came here on Sunday and accused other leaders of the compensation of Mwache Dam, I want to assure you that we are going to ensure that the compensation is done appropriately, “said Mvurya.
