926 test COVID-19 positive weekend to school re-opening

With learners from grade 4, class 8 and form 4 expected to resume learning on Monday, the country recorded a spike in new COVID-19 infections on the weekend to the re-opening.

According to the Ministry of Health, 926 people tested positive for the virus this weekend (538 on Saturday and 388 on Sunday), age ranging from 1 year to 85 years old.

The weekend infections are from 11,159 sample tested in the last 48 hours (6,872 0n Saturday and 4,287 on Sunday).

The new infections now put the country’s COVID-19 infections toll at 41,546.

Coast region recorded 120 new infections over the weekend with Mombasa having the highest numbers with 84 cases for both days followed by Kilifi’s 31 which were recorded on Saturday. Kwale County recorded 5 cases for both days.

The country lost 11 people to the disease on Saturday and Sunday while 124 recovered.

Total recoveries now stand at 31,000 and fatalities at 766.

With the recoveries and fatalities, active COVID-19 cases in the country are at 9,780 which is 23.5 percent of the total infections.

Resumption of learning in phases started on Monday 5th with the government hoping to fully re-open learning institutions as the curve flattens.
