Two dead, 16 others including Joho’s nephew and niece injured in Kilifi accident

Two people died on the spot while 16 others including a nephew of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho’s sustained serious injuries in two separate accidents that occurred at Shauri Moyo area along the Kilifi -Mombasa Highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the first accident involved a Toyota Landcruiser V8 vehicle that was ferrying Joho’s niece and her family.

Witnesses said Joho’s nephew who has been identified as Abu Joho’s son was responding to a distress call from his sister and her family after they were involved in the first accident when his vehicle collided with a 14 seater matatu.

The accident involving his sister saw her vehicle collide with a canter lorry.

The injured were rushed to the Kilifi county referral hospital.

Joho’s nephew who is in critical condition was airlifted to the Mombasa hospital for treatment while his sister and her family are receiving treatment at the Kilifi county referral hospital.

The conductor of the lorry sustained serious chest injuries in the afternoon accident.

Paul Muhonge, an ambulance driver from Mombasa cement said he was called by his boss informing him of the accident at Shauri Moyo and upon rushing to the scene, they found the victims lying along the busy road.

”My vehicle ferried two victims while the other ambulance ferried four people. Unfortunately, one succumbed to her injuries” he said.

Kilifi Health CEC Charles Dadu Confirmed that two of the victims had succumbed including a mother who was traveling in the matatu to Mtwapa.

He said the mother was traveling with her son who is in critical condition.

Dadu said so far three people are still in critical condition under the close watch of the medical personnel while the 13 others were stable and responding well to treatment.

”At around 4.30 pm today we got a phone call about a grisly road accident near Mombasa cement we sought emergency services to respond, now we have completed rescuing them,” he said.

Dadu said 10 ambulances were mobilized including 8 from the county and two from the Mombasa cement.

He said they would give out a comprehensive report on Tuesday on the status of those who sustained injuries.

According to Suleiman Charo an eye witness, the saloon car that was being driven by Joho’s nephew collided with a matatu

” I heard a screeching sound and a bang and when I opened my eyes, i saw the two vehicles had collided.” He said.

The accident occurred in an area which is a hotspot and many lives have been lost by motorists plying the route.
