Saburi released and ordered to self-quarantine

Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has been released on a sh. 200,000 cash bail by a Mombasa court.

Saburi who has been in police custody for two weeks, has also been ordered to self quarantine at his Mombasa home for 14 days.

Mombasa principal Magistrate Elvis Micheka also ordered Saburi to adhere to all government directives to avert the spread of covid-19 virus.

” The accused to deposit all his travel documents that is passport before his release. The accused shall not contact any witnesses of this case”, said Micheka .

Saburi had earlier protested medical results conducted by Kemri and presented in court showing he tested positive for covid-19.

Through his counsel George Kithi, all the the three tests carried on his client at Coast General Hospital were negative for covid-19.

The court has also dismissed an application by the prosecution counsel Alloys Kemo seeking to detain Saburi for ten more days to enable them complete investigatons.

In his application, Kemo informed court they are yet to record a statement from Saburi’s driver who is in isolation after testing positive for covid-19.

The DG pleaded not guilty for the offence of exposing the public to infectious disease after defying self quarantine regulation when he jetted back to the country on 6th, March 2020 from Germany.
