Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has been arrested in Voi just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Hajj ordered his arrest.
The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji ordered arrest and prosecution of Nairobi county governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko over graft allegations .
In a press briefing on Friday morning ,Hajji said that he has sufficient evidence to prosecute governor Sonko and other county employees over alleged graft.
As per the DPP ,others facing arrest are county secretary Peter Mbugua and members of the county tender committee.
Haji said that the governor and his staff face charges of conspiracy to commit economic crimes, willful failure to comply with the law and conflict of interest.
“I have ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment of Sonko and other officials for the crimes of conflict of interest arising from having received money from the county of Nairobi while serving as governor, unlawful acquisition of public property”Hajj said
The DPP pointed that there has been attempts of hindering investigations of the matter.
“Investigation into these crimes have been challenging because of the repeated attempt by the accused to obstruct the cause of the investigations .”Hajj said
Ethics and Anti corruption commission detectives are probing allegations of contravention of the law during procuring process of paying shs 350 million to a contractor.
Sonko is expected to be arraigned in court to face various charges among them conspiracy to commit economic crimes and willful failure to comply.
