Water shortage crisis bites in Mombasa

According to the notice, the breakdown has affected the main pump station for the Baricho dam which supplies water to the northern parts of the county.

However, the regional manager Hezekiah Mwalwalwa was quoted by the Daily nation saying the technical hitch was as a result of a power cut at the pumping station over unpaid bills.

In February, another technical breakdown at the pumping station left taps dry for two weeks while perennial pipe bursts at the Mzima springs left taps dry in the western part of Mombasa for two weeks in April.

Last week, the World Bank approved a sh 10.7 billion loan and grant that is set to finance water and sanitation infrastructure projects in Mombasa,Kilifi,Kwale and Taita Taveta .

Mombasa county which has been hit hard by perennial water shortage incidents is expected to receive the lion’s share of the cash at sh. 3 billion followed by Kilifi,Taita Taveta and Kwale counties.
